Lesson 10: The Legacy of Ancient Greece

The origins of many things in our modern world can be traced back to Ancient Greece. One of the most obvious examples is architecture. Greek architecture was so beautiful that we have copied it in many of our own buildings.

This picture is of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The Parthenon was built almost 2500 years ago. Many people think it is the most beautiful building ever made.

The influence of Greek architecture is obvious. Look at the columns, for example—very Greek-like. Like the Parthenon, the gallery is rectangular in shape, with tall entranceways. These entranceways are covered with triangular-shaped roofs.

Have you noticed this style of architecture in any other buildings?

The influence of the Ancient Greeks goes well beyond architecture. They made lasting contributions in many other areas, including mathematics, science, medicine, literature, drama and language.
