Human beings have been around for hundreds of thousands of years, but it wasn't until we settled together in large groups that we became civilized. It was in the earliest cities that the systems of writing, government, religion, and economic activity that are characteristic of civilizations were first established.

The world's earliest civilization was in a region of the Middle East known as Mesopotamia. You will learn about this great civilization in this module.
