Write a short report on an everyday hero

In this lesson, you read about several people who have tried to tackle big problems like eliminating child poverty and exploitation and bringing medical services to victims of war. You may have thought that their actions were admirable and inspirational but were also the acts of extraordinary individuals. Many people might think themselves incapable of such acts of individual heroism; the tasks seem so big! Sometimes, though, it is possible to make a difference in the world by doing something small. It may be an act of kindness for one other person or it could be an individual expression of concern or feelings about a wrong in the world.

Prepare a one page report on a citizen who has done something to make his or her community a better place. It could be someone you know personally or someone you have read or heard about and whose actions you admire. Whomever you choose, your report should answer the following questions:

  • What problem did this person try to solve?
  • What did he or she accomplish?
  • What personal characteristics contributed to this person's success?
