Royal British Columbia Museum (RBC Museum)

Where can you visit a woolly mammoth that roamed BC 13,000 years ago? And where can you see Captain Vancouver’s ship HMS Discovery? How about touring a ‘big house’ used for First Nations ceremonies? You can see these and many more exhibits on the people and the natural history of BC at the Royal British Columbia Museum.

Thunderbird Park

For nearly 60 years, Thunderbird Park has been one of downtown Victoria’s most extraordinary features. The park’s impressive display of totem poles and big houses has made it a tourist landmark. The poles represent many villages of the coastal First Nations. They stand in testimony to a carving tradition that has been passed along for generations.

Other attractions on the grounds of the Royal BC Museum include:

  • Helmcken House, a pioneer doctor’s residence, built in 1852
  • The original log cabin schoolhouse operated by the Sisters of St Ann, who came to Victoria in 1858
