Rules for Referencing Online Resources

Copyright Notice!!!
Before you plough into the Internet and plunder text and / or graphics for your projects, a word of caution: copyright is an issue you should respect. Copying and using written or graphic materials and claiming them as your own is plagiarism and is actually a legal offense.

Acknowledge where you found the information.

Cite the source (website address, or web page address) and the author's name, if available.

e.g.,

author: John Smith

So, now that you have found it and know how to reference it properly, how do you keep it?

To capture an image: Scroll over the image you want then hold down the mouse button (Macintosh) or right click the mouse button (PC). You will then see a box with a lot of choices in it. The choice you want is Save Image As. When you choose this, you will be asked where you want to save a copy of the image. Save the image in a location you will remember.

To capture text: Highlight what you want to copy by holding the left mouse button down and moving the cursor over the text you want to copy. This "highlights" the text. Next, select Copy from the Edit menu. A keyboard shortcut for this is Command/C (Macintosh) or Control/C (PC). Paste the text into a word processing document by selecting Paste from the Edit menu. A keyboard shortcut for this is Command/V(Macintosh) or Control/V (PC).

To get back to a site: When you end up at a site you like and you want to get back there, choose Bookmarks (Netscape) or Favourites (Internet Explorer). This records the address (URL) in a file. The next time you want to go to that site, click on Bookmarks or Favourites again and locate the site.
