    The Test for Effectiveness

    Introduction

A student was skeptical about the claims of a certain antibacterial soap advertisement stating that the soap killed 99.9% of the bacteria on the hands of a person who washed with it. He decided to investigate these claims by conducting an experiment. He predicted that antibacterial soap is not more effective at killing bacteria than regular hand soap.

He asked a question: “Is antibacterial soap more effective at killing bacteria than regular hand soap?”

The student’s assumption was that “antibacterial soap is not more effective at killing bacteria than regular soap”

Convert this assumptiom into a hypothesis, using an “if/then” formulation.

    Answer

If antibacterial soap is no more effective than regular soap, then the number of bacteria on the human hand of a person who washed with antibacterial soap will be similar to the number of bacteria on the hand of a person who washed with regular soap.
