Tool for Success—Constructing a Concept Map

This technique will help you make connections between seemingly unrelated topics. Here are the steps:

Step 1. Write the theme in the middle of a piece of paper.
Step 2. Draw a circle around the theme.
Step 3. Draw a line about 3 centimetres long from the edge of the circle outward.
Step 4. Write a related topic to the theme.
Step 5. Draw a square around the topic.
Step 6. Write a connecting word or phrase along the line that connects the theme with the topic.
Step 7. Repeat steps 2 through 5 for additional topics.
Step 8. When you have several topics, try to find a relationship between them.
Step 9. If you find a relationship between two topics, draw a line that connects both topics.
Step 10. Write a connecting word or phrase along the topic-to-topic line.

Note: The scoring rubric in the Toolbox includes colour coding and illustrations as part of the criteria. Your concept map can be simple or detailed.
