Course Navigation in WebCT

There are two frames, or areas, used to display a course. The vertical frame on the left of the browser window is the navigation frame, while the larger area on the right is the content frame. The navigation frame contains a list of links for the contents of the course. To access the contents of an item, click on the item name so that the contents for the item are displayed in the content frame (to the right of the navigation frame). For example, clicking on the item name "Module 1" results in the display of the home page for Module 1 in the content frame. The content frame contains home pages (one for the course, and every module in the course), section table of contents pages (for all sections in a course) and the course content.

In the section table of contents page, a solid arrowhead pointing to the left of an item indicates that that item contains something. Clicking the arrowhead opens the item to display a list of the contents that are within that item. For example, clicking on the arrowhead beside "Section 1.1" results in a listing of the lessons that make up the section. When an item is open, it's arrowhead points down. To close the item, click on the arrowhead. All items are links, so clicking on the words will open that page of content.

Once you are in the content of a section, you can use the “Forward” and “Back” buttons at the top of the content frame (below the course title bar) to move forwards and backwards through the pages that make up the section. There is also a button to return to the section table of contents page, to the left of the “Back” button.

Hint: Roll your mouse over a button and look to the lower left corner of the window to see information about that button’s function.

Working with Content

If you encounter display problems you may need to click the reload or refresh button on your browser. For example, if you resize your browser window, you may lose the display of some content. Clicking the reload button will reload the page and display the complete content.

If you want to print a screen of content, be sure to click in the course content frame to select it before choosing the print option from your browser’s menu bar.

When you click on a guided practice item the activity will appear in the content frame. These are self-marked activities to help you test yourself on how much you’ve learned. For some questions there will be a box labelled “Answer.” To check if your answer to the question matches the given answer, click in the “Answer” box. Another box will appear containing the answer to the question. To close this box, click again in the first “Answer” box. Depending on the guided practice, you may wish to go through all the questions first, noting your answers on a piece of paper or in a word processor, before checking your answers.
