True or False?

Should you believe everything you read on the Web? Well, it all depends on who wrote it. Since anyone can put information on the Web, you need to carefully check:

  • What is the author's authority (is the author an expert?)
  • Is the information fact or opinion?

One way to check the information is to look it up in other sources. For example, encyclopedias print only well-researched facts. They are always carefully edited and checked for errors. It is usually a good idea to compare several sources when you are researching a topic.

When you find information on the web, why not use a search engine to check out the author at the same time? You can make a web search of the author's name to find out what their background and training is on the subject.

In the window above we've navigated to http://www.yahoo.com to find out what other documents Lesley Ellen Harris has written. Notice that we put her name in the search area above and clicked the search button. In the window below it shows the first two of 178 web pages that include "Lesley Ellen Harris". (Remember her from the previous page?)
