FOODSAFE Level 1 and 2 and the
FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher course
The FOODSAFE online courses are now available online through a partnership with Open School BC. FOODSAFE Level 1 provides all food service employees with the mandatory training in proper food handling practices. FOODSAFE Level 2 is designed for food service industry owners, managers, kitchen managers, executive chefs, and others who are responsible for managing food safety in food service establishments. The FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course is a short course designed for people who have successfully completed FOODSAFE Level 1 in the past, and want to renew their existing FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate. Food Safety Basics – Review Course is a review of the FOODSAFE Level 1 course for those that are about to take the FOODSAFE Level 2 classroom course.
The course covers key safe food handling information including the causes of foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, serving food and cleaning and sanitizing. The FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course can only be taken by individuals who have previously taken BC FOODSAFE Level 1.
The online courses offer the following advantages:
Work at your own pace anywhere at any time—all that is required is a computer with an Internet connection. Please note: The FOODSAFE Level 1 online course begins every Thursday and runs for 20 days. FOODSAFE Level 2 begins on a Tuesday and lasts for 28 days. The FOODSAFE Refresher course lasts for ten days upon successful registration. The Food Safety Basics course lasts two weeks (14 days).
FOODSAFE online instructors are certified food safety experts who assist students online and answer questions. Government, business, health, safety and education professionals in British Columbia developed these FOODSAFE courses cooperatively. Note: the FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course and the Food Safety Basics Course do not have an instructor.
Upon successful completion of the FOODSAFE course and exam, you will be registered with BC Centre for Disease Control and be issued a FOODSAFE certificate from your local health authority. The FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course offers Level 1 re-certification upon passing the final exam.

Note: discounts are available to organizations that purchase multiple seats and agree to invigilate the final exam. FOODSAFE Level 2: $165 per student. FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course: $35 per student. The Food Safety Basics Course is $25.

The FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course is for those people who have their BC Level 1 FOODSAFE certificate and want to renew it.
This course will review the key points covered in FOODSAFE Level 1 and includes a mandatory exam that the student must pass with 80% or better to receive their new certificate. Once you have accessed the Account Manager and completed filling in your personal information for the FOODSAFE Level 1 Refresher Course, you are automatically enrolled in the course, and you have ten days to complete it.
Note: you must have received your FOODSAFE certificate from a BC Health Authority to take this refresher course.
Food Safety Basics – Review Course
Food Safety Basics is a review of safe food handling practice intended for people who have already completed FOODSAFE Level 1 and have applied to take the FOODSAFE Level 2 classroom course. Please note: Food Safety Basics is NOT equivalent to FOODSAFE Level 1.
FOODSAFE Level 2 is designed for food service industry owners, managers, kitchen
managers, executive chefs, and others who are responsible for managing food
safety in food service establishments.
This course will give you the tools to:
- create and maintain a culture of food safety
- reduce the risk of foodborne illness in your establishment
- prepare a sanitation plan and a food safety plan
