Open School BC designed its Social Studies 11 resource to meet the Integrated Resource Package (IRP) requirements, released by the Ministry of Education in September 2005. This exciting course addresses all the Prescribed Learning Outcomes and curriculum changes, while the accompanying interactive multimedia CD, Our Century, helps strengthen students’ conceptual understanding of Canada’s political, historical, and social environment in this time period.
Social Studies 11 makes extensive use of exciting and engaging multimedia to focus on Canada’s 20th century political, social and historical environment, from the years 1914 - 2000. Various themes are revisited throughout the course, including Canada’s political structure, its role in international affairs, cultural and societal changes, and human geography. Themes from the past are linked to current issues and events wherever possible.
The Social Studies 11 Resource Package includes all four modules, the multimedia CD-ROM and the provincial exam preparation package (PEPP). The PEPP includes sample essay questions and study tips, to help learners thoroughly prepare for the provincial exam.
Module One explores the structure of Canadian government, the political spectrum, and electoral systems. Modules Two and Three focus on Canada's role in 20th century history, including the two world wars, United Nations’ peacekeeping efforts, and international affairs. Module Four addresses population, standards of living, environmental challenges, and Canada's response to global issues such as global warming and ozone layer depletion. Please see the shaded boxes area below for a further detail on the sections.
The Teacher's Guide contains a description of each lesson, the learning outcomes addressed in the lesson, the resources required and answer keys and scoring rubrics for the assignments. There are also helpful teaching tips for both classroom and online environments, alternative activities to address different learning styles, and suggestions for other resources.
The Teacher's Guide also includes all versions of the tests and answer keys. For more information on the multimedia components in the CD-ROM, please see our Multimedia Features Page.
