Open School BC Science 9

Students will explore the life, physical, and space sciences, they will be involved in activities as diverse as extracting DNA to planning a space journey.

Sciene 9 solar system

In the four Science 9 modules, students learn about:

  • Life Science: Cells and Reproduction
  • Physical Science: Exploring the Colours of Chemistry
  • Physical Science: Take Charge! Electricity
  • Space Science: A Journey Through Space

For detailed description of topics covered, see shaded boxes below.

Science 9 is designed for self-paced individual learners or can be used as a teacher’s reference. All course components use modular instruction, projects, guided practice, and assessments (both formal and informal) to engage the student.

The course is written for use with either Nelson’s BC Science Probe 9 or McGraw-Hill Ryerson’s BC Science 9 textbook. Course modules are independent of each other, so they may be taken in any order. Perfect for the savvy teacher or motivated student looking to cover what they want when they want.

Science 9 is available in print or online delivery formats and interactive multimedia components are available to students either from within the online course or through a companion CD-ROM. A helpful companion website is available with links to online resources; these are not required for the course.

The Resource Package includes the four course modules, Science Orientation Skills booklet, a Backline Master and interactive multimedia CD-ROM.

Science 9 students are encouraged to use the Science Orientation Skills (SOS) Package. This package introduces key concepts such as scientific literacy, methodology, and safety. It also outlines guidelines and examples of lab reports, research strategies and formulas. The package is available in print, on the companion CD-ROM and online formats.
