OSBC Math 8

math 8

We are pleased to introduce our first ever mathematics multimedia CD. The Math 8 Media CD contains a variety of multimedia resources that enhance the Math 8 course and learning experience, and it is an excellent resource for grade 8 mathematics classrooms. This multimedia CD-ROM, originally developed to complement our Math 8 course, contains resources that are useful tools in addressing the Mathematics 8 IRP in the classroom and online. The Media CD is available as a single user version and/or as a network version to be shared from a school's server.

Open School BC's Math 8 Media CD has integrated multimedia tools that engage students and foster an investigative approach to mathematics. Demonstration and teaching videos help illustrate concepts while reinforcing the mathematical process. Through animations, video clips, and interactive activities, students will learn important concepts and practice new skills. Developed in consultation with experienced BC and Alberta Math teachers, the activities and videos on the Math 8 Media CD are intuitive and easy to use for both students and teachers.

Module 1:
Exploring 2-D and
3-D
Connections

Drawing Dimensions; students are shown how to create isometric drawings, and represent a 3-D object using views
Nets and Views; interactive multimedia shows how to identify the net of different shapes and how to match views to objects
How to Make a Net for a Triangular Prism and a Cylinder; teacher-made video features a grade 8 student explaining how to make a net for a triangular prism and a cylinder
Constructing Cylinders; multimedia animation shows how to calculate length of a cylinder’s net using the circle’s circumference
Exploring Surface Area and Volume; this interactive multimedia allows students to see how the volume and surface area of different shapes change when the length, width and height of the object are adjusted
Create a Translation Tessellation; step by step instructions to show you how to build a translation tessellation using cards, scissors and tape

Module 2:
Squares, Integers, and the Pythagorean Theorem

Solving a Multiplication Word Problem; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to use pictures and groups to help solve multiplication word problems
Solving a Division Word Problem; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to use pictures and groups to help solve division word problems
Multiplication Steps; this video demonstrates the multiplication of positive and negative integers by following Megan and Cameron as they climb stairs
Simplifying; in this video Jeff shows 2 different ways to simplify an expression that contains both multiplication and division
Solving Mixed Multiplication and Division; in this video Jeff works through 3 examples showing how to simplify expressions that contain both multiplication and division
Using Order of Operations; in this video Jennifer shows how to work through 2 questions using “BEDMAS” (exponents not included)
Shape Shifter; this multimedia exercise allows students to explore the lengths of the sides of triangles, including right triangles, and the areas of rectangles, including squares
Using Order of Operations with Squares; in this video Jennifer shows how to work through 2 two questions using “BEDMAS” (with exponents)
Is It a Right Triangle; in this video Jeff shows how to use the Pythagorean theorem to see if a triangle is a right triangle
Understanding Squares and Square Roots; in this video Jennifer explains square roots and shows how squares and square roots “undo” each other
Finding the Length of the Hypotenuse; in this video Jeff shows how to use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle
Finding the Length of a Right Triangle Leg; in this video Jeff shows how to find the length of a right triangle leg using the Pythagorean theorem

Module 3:
Data, Graphing, and Linear Questions

Linear Equations; this multimedia resource enables students to discover relationships in linear equations by plotting points and changing values in the equation
Using a Ruler to Find Missing Points; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to find missing points on a graph using two different methods (using a table of values, and using the graph and a ruler)
Working with Algebra Tiles; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to solve two different equations using algebra tiles
Solving a Two-Step Linear Equation; in this video Jennifer shows how to use inverse operations to solve an equation
Solving a Linear Equation with a Fractional Coefficient; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to solve a linear equation that contains a fractional coefficient
Solving a Linear Equation using the Distributive Property; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to use the distributive property to simplify a linear equation before solving it.

Module 4:
Fractions, Ratios, and Probability

Changing Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions; in this video Jeff shows how to change between mixed numbers and improper fractions
Multiplying with Fraction Strips; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to set up and use fraction strips to solve a multiplication problem
Multiplying Fractions; in this video Jeff describes the multiplication of fractions using a simple diagram, and then works through two multiplication questions
Dividing with Fraction Strips; in this video Jennifer demonstrates how to set up and use fraction strips to solve a division problem
Dividing with Fractions; in this video Jeff describes the division of fractions using a simple diagram, and then works through two division questions
Perfecting Percents; in this interactive multimedia resource, students can change the shaded area of hundreds grids to show different values expressed as a percent, fraction and decimal number (3 different areas show percents from 0-1%, 1-100%, and 100-200%)
Changing Percents to Fractions, Ratios and Decimals; in this video Jeff works through 2 examples showing how to change percents to fractions, ratios and decimals
Changing Fractions, Ratios and Decimals to Percents; in this video Jeff shows how to convert from fractions, ratios and decimals to percents
Exploring Probability; in this interactive multimedia resource, students are able to see the sample spaces and probabilities that result from one or two independent events involving a coin, spinner, and die
