Open School BC Math 8 Feature Page

narcissusMathematics 8 builds on concepts taught in previous grades and introduces new skills. These skills include: working with 2-D and 3-D objects; creating tessellations; understanding and calculating squares and square roots; solving problems with the Pythagorean Theorem; understanding statistical graphs, working with linear equations including graphing and solving; multiplying and dividing fractions; working with percent; and calculating the probability of independent events.

Open School BC's Mathematics 8 has integrated multimedia tools that engage students and foster an investigative approach to mathematics. Demonstration and teaching videos help illustrate the concepts behind the process of doing mathematics.

The successful development of Mathematics 8 is the result of direct participation from Distance Education Schools and classroom teachers. Open School BC gratefully acknowledges their support and guidance throughout the development process. The course is aligned with the Mathematics Grade 8 IRP released in 2008.

  • The attractive visual design of the print version of Mathematics 8 includes the "Thinking Space." Each lesson throughout the course contains a space along the side of the page where students are challenged to think carefully through or beyond the course material and can jot down their own notes, questions or calculations.
  • A pretest is featured at the beginning of each section. Students have the option of completing this pretest if they feel that they already have a strong understanding of the concepts in the section.
  • The multimedia component contains an extensive variety of teaching and demonstration videos and engaging interactive multimedia including investigative tools.

Mathematics 8 consists of four modules with three sections in each module. Students send in an assignment at the end of each section, and each module has a module test or optional module project. The course was written to include several media pieces such as demonstration videos and interactive media. The Math 8 Media CD is required for the print version of the course and must be purchased separately. There is no textbook required.

Math 8 Modules
line

Module 1: Exploring 2-D and 3-D Connections

Section 1: Nets and Views
Section 2: Calculations in 2-D and 3-D
Section 3: Shapes and Design

Students compare 2-D drawings with 3-D objects, draw nets and views of 3-D objects, compute surface area and volume, and design tessellations.

Module 2: Squares, Integers, and the Pythagorean Theorem

Section 1: Multiplying and Dividing Integers
Section 2: Squares and Square Roots
Section 3: The Pythagorean Theorem

Students work through the concepts of squares and square roots, learn about integer multiplication, and learn about and practice solving triangles with the Pythagorean Theorem.

Module 3: Data, Graphing, and Linear Equations

Section 1: Analyzing Statistical Graphs
Section 2: Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
Section 3: Linear Equations

Students first analyse and critique various statistical graphs. The final two sections deal with linear equations, both graphing and solving.

Module 4: Fractions, Ratios, and Probability

Section 1: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
Section 2: Ratios, Rates and Percents
Section 3: Probability

Students learn to multiply and divide fractions, discover the relationship between fractions, ratios, percents and decimals, and solve problems involving the probability of independent events.
