This completely redesigned course will engage students by taking them on a literary journey through some of the most powerfully written works of our time, using them to explain specific literary concepts.
This resource offers choice and flexibility to the teacher and student, both in the selection of which modules to use and in the variety of activities within the modules.
As well as being the perfect course to offer in a Distributed Learning program, this is also an excellent resource for the classroom teacher. With new and creative lessons, assignments, tests and blackline masters, it delivers exceptional value to both the veteran and new teacher.
Module tests have been created for Modules 1-5. The tests for Modules 2-5 have been developed using the same structure as that found in the Ministry of Education's revised English 12 Provincial Examination.
The English 12 Media CD includes rich, interactive multimedia pieces that offer tutorials, illustrate concepts, and illuminate literature. Some of the resources included are:
- Will's World: the award-winning multimedia resource (Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction for Best Overall Production in the Second International Conference of the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education) that includes a graphically rich environment where students interact with William Shakespeare's 17th century England
- Minoru: Memory of Exile: an animated narrative of a grandfather, who lived through internment as a Japanese Canadian during WWII
- A series of audio recordings from the CBC Poetry Face-Off, 2008
- Excerpts from video interviews with a variety of fiction authors

English 12 Modules
|
Module 1:
Connecting the Dots |
This module introduces the student to various forms of informational literacy, with three predominant strands: health literacy, advertising literacy, and environmental literacy. The assignments and activities use real world situations to illustrate ideas and concepts and apply contemporary examples to engage the student. |
Module 2:
Short Prose and Novel Study: Obasan |
Obasan by Joy Kogawa is a highly acclaimed novel exploring the origins and legacy of the internment of Japanese Canadian citizens by the Canadian government during the Second World War. Students learn key terms and concepts related to structure and function in the novel and short prose. Students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of literature through reflective writing, critical analysis and interpretation, and creative assignments.
|
Module 3:
Short Prose and Novel Study: The Kite Runner |
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini tells the tale of an Afghan-American writer who returns to his homeland under Taliban rule, to atone for the mistakes of his past. Students will identify symbols and themes in this novel, expressing what they have learned through creative and critical writing.
|
Module 4:
Short Prose and Novel Study: Keeper'n Me |
Keeper'n Me by Richard Wagamese tells the story of Garnet Raven, Ojibway, taken from his family at three years of age and placed in foster care. As a young man, the protagonist ends up in jail, where a member of his family contacts him. Raven then returns home to rediscover the traditional ways of his people. Students will learn how to respond to the novel, discussing setting, atmosphere and characterization though reflective writing, critical analysis and interpretation, and creative assignments.
|
Module 5: Poetry |
The poetry module is designed for use with the critically applauded poetry volume, The New Canon: An Anthology of Canadian Poetry (Signal Editions, 2006). The poems in this anthology introduce a new generation of Canadian poets to the fore. Students will take at look at language, patterns and syntax as they discover the world of poetry. |
Module 6: Hamlet |
The revised Hamlet module includes references to Will's World, a multimedia resource developed by OSBC. Will's World is included on the English 12 Media CD, and features information and activities about Shakespearean England. |
Module 7: Death of a Salesman |
The module for this longstanding dramatic classic has been updated using Open School's BC's new design templates. The lessons in this module are designed to help students examine and analyze pivotal scenes in the play, considering how both realism and expressionism may inform the interpretation of events. |
