By reading, listening, and viewing a variety of fiction and non-fiction selections, we invite students to think about the world around them from their points of view, as well as from those of others. This course promotes personal and intellectual growth through the exploration of topical and timeless issues. Students will be given the opportunity to express their own perspectives on the various issues through personalized responses, such as journals and discussions, and through the more formal demonstration of writing projects, such as the multi-paragraph composition.
Key topics in English 10 include:
- Introduction to the multi-paragraph composition
- Review of common punctuation, usage, and sentence errors
- Introduction to literary analysis
- Exploration of a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts
This exploration of the English language is divided into four different paths of study depending on students’ skills and interests, and the direction the teacher would like to take them. Those that need a review of basic reading and writing strategies can select a skills-building module, while students who want to enhance and enrich their literary curiosity may choose an extension module like Romeo and Juliet. The choice of novel studies can be determined by the student or by the instructor.
Open School BC’s English 10 includes rich, interactive multimedia pieces that offer tutorials, illustrate concepts, or illuminate literature. Will’s World is a graphically rich environment that allows students to interact with William Shakespeare’s 17th century England. To capture teenage interest, the Graphic Ballad uses a comic book style to illustrate the ballad concept.

Writing on the Run!, available as a stand-alone print or CD resource, is a complete collection of grammar tutorials and quizzes for senior English. The Literary Device Library introduces common literary terms and devises in an interesting and engaging audio-visual way for the student.
