Copying and Credits

The Web is a great place to do research for school assignments. When you do a report, it is important to give credit to where you got the information. This might include information you found in a book, a magazine, or from a web site.

The author's name is usually (but not always) given at the very bottom of the page or pages of a web site. When you include your web sources in a bibliography, remember to put the URL in place of (or along with) the publisher's name if it is given.

Whether you copy a part of someone's work exactly (as in a quotation) or simply use their ideas in your written work, always give proper credit to your information sources.

Important:

"The same copyright rules which apply to all copyright works (books, graphics, software, CD-ROMs, records, and films) apply to works found on the Internet."

Lesley Ellen Harris, Canadian Copyright Law, http://www.mghr.com/copyrightlaw/, 1995.

Look carefully at the order of author information (credits) above. It shows an example of how to cite a reference in order of:

Author, title of item, http://address/filenames, date of document or download.

Check with your teacher on how to write down credits or arrange the bibliography when you do a written project or report. Your teacher may want you to write the credits differently from the above sample.
